Visual Perimeter for LOTO Procedures

Retractable barriers to mark and cordon off the area around isolated equipment during maintenance. Customised belts featuring a lockout message, standard color-coding, and details of the active procedure.

Signage and Demarcation

The barrier does not isolate the energy; it indicates who is not allowed to enter

The Lockout/Tagout procedure mechanically secures all sources of hazardous energy (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermal) prior to maintenance work. Actual isolation is achieved through padlocks, locked valves, and authorized personnel tags. The role of Dsafety in this context is complementary: to mark the visible perimeter around the equipment being worked on and to inform those moving through the facility that an active procedure is underway inside, accessible only to designated personnel.

Role in the procedure

Mark the boundary, don’t lock out the energy

Hazardous energy is isolated with locks, valves, and labels—that is true lockout. The Dsafety barrier serves a different purpose: to indicate where the work area begins and to require personnel moving through the plant to take a conscious step.

What the system provides: a base raised off the floor by rubber pads, progressive belt deceleration, and a stable position that does not move when someone brushes against it while passing.

Customised belts

The printed message is the warning tool

The retractable belt is customised with the LOTO text, the standard color code, and the procedure details. Dye-sublimation printing covers 100% of the surface. Anyone approaching the perimeter views exactly what type of zone they are entering.

Common messages: "DANGER — Equipment Under Maintenance," "Do Not Operate — Active Lockout," "Restricted Access — Authorized Personnel Only," ISO 7010 pictograms, and yellow/black or red/white color coding per ISO 3864.

Entry point

Where the belt ends, control begins

Barriers are placed leaving a defined gap: that gap is the authorized access to the equipment. The person in charge of the procedure controls who passes through, verifies the worker’s identity, and checks that they have their personal LOTO tag before entering.

Can be combined with A4/A3 poster holders to display the specific LOTO procedure, the list of isolated energy sources, and the identification of the authorized person in charge of the lockout.

The role of the barrier in the LOTO procedure

Where the barrier comes into play in the 6 LOTO steps

01
Preparation
Identify energy sources and plan isolation. Set up barriers around the perimeter.
→ Barriers in place
02
Notification
Notify all affected personnel. The LOTO belt barrier visually communicates the situation.
→ Belt with message displayed
03
Shutdown
Shut down the equipment according to procedure. The perimeter prevents access by unauthorized personnel.
→ Perimeter active
04
Isolation + Lockout
Mechanical lockout of power sources using padlocks and LOTO tags. The perimeter reinforces access restrictions.
→ Sign holder with procedure
05
Verification
Verify that all energy sources are effectively isolated. The perimeter defines the verification zone.
→ Controlled access
06
Restoration
Removal of blockages and return to service. Barriers are retracted—the area is cleared.
→ Barriers retracted
Industry
Production plants
Maintenance of industrial machinery, production lines, presses, injection molding machines. Isolation of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Energy
Electrical installations
Substations, electrical panels, transformer rooms. Caging during high- and low-voltage work.
Logistics
Warehouses and distribution centers
Maintenance of conveyor systems, belts, automated systems. Forklift repair areas.
